LustreClear

Product Description

LustreClear Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) / Carrageenan-Based Coating System is used as an aqueous, clear-film coating on tablets and other solid-dosage forms. LustreClear uses a breakthrough technology based on the unique combination of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and carrageenan (a natural hydrocolloid). This innovative combination provides a trouble-free, timesaving coating operation that allows short hydration time prior to coating, and fast drying time.

Applications

LustreClear is used as an aqueous, clear-film coating manufactured from NF-grade materials. It is a completely water-based system with no added organic solvents, supplied in powder form. LustreClear hydrates without foaming and is easy to disperse, with solution and coating done in the same day. It offers an easy-to-use, all-in-one processing system with batch-to-batch consistency on tablets and other solid-dosage forms. LustreClear has high shear thinning and viscoelastic properties.

Benefits

  • Coats waxy matrices or actives (i.e., ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen)
  • Easier to swallow *
  • Unique taste masking
  • No logo bridging
  • Produces elegant finished solid-dosage forms
  • Easy-to-use, all-in-one processing system

Detailed Product Description

A sensory evaluation was conducted of placebo tablets coated with LustreClear vs. those coated with HPMC.*

Both coatings were evaluated by an expert descriptive panel to identify sensory characteristics, such as appearance, flavor, texture, and ease of swallow. The panel found the samples to be different in several key areas, including shine, coatedness, flavor, slipperiness, rate of dissolve, surface feel, mouthcoating, particles, and awareness going down during swallowing.

In a separate consumer study, 125 participants found LustreClear to be equal or better than HPMC in almost all tested attributes. Key highlights included:

  • 70 participants preferred tablets coated with LustreClear vs. 55 for those coated with HPMC
  • With better than 95% confidence levels, consumers found LustreClear easier to swallow, and it had less taste intensity
  • Most of the participants who frequently take tablets found the tablet coated with HPMC was more noticed in swallowing.
