Avicel Colloidal
Microcrystalline Cellulose and Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, NF, BP
Microcrystalline Cellulose and Guar Gum
Carrageenan NF

The combination of microcystalline cellulose with synergistic polymers such as carboxymethylcellulose or guar gum yields excipients with unique functionality, especially relevant to liquid, semi-solid, and some solid formulations. Avicel RC/CL water dispersible colloidal excipients are used in the preparation of pharmaceutical suspensions and emulsions. The wide range of thixotropy, viscosity, gel strength, and dispersion characteristics available in this product line provides functional versatility. Avicel CE, a proprietary combination of microcrystalline cellulose and guar gum, is a specialized chewable tablet excipient that provides superior sensory properties.

FMC BioPolymer also offers NF grades of carrageenan to the pharmaceutical industry. These water-soluble hydrocolloids impart unique rheology to liquid systems. For example, SeaSpen® PF yields a "slow release thixotropy" which facilitates initial dispersion in reconstitutable suspensions. Pharmaceutical formulators look to Gelcarin® and Viscarin® carrageenan, NF to thicken oral pharmaceutical solutions.

Attributes and Benefits

Avicel colloidal products are highly thixotropic, structured dispersion vehicles that yield desirable permanent suspensions without settling or sedimentation.  When used in reconstitutible suspensions, Avicel facilitates hydration of the dry mix. Avicel suspensions are stable to heat, freeze/thaw, and over a wide pH range. In addition, studies have shown Avicel to have bioadhesive properties that benefit nasal spray formulations. Avicel is an excellent stabilizer for oil-in-water emulsions, reducing oil droplet movement and coalescence.

As the manufacturer of a wide range of Avicel microcrystalline cellulose products, FMC is highly skilled at using innovative processing technology to achieve new functionalities.  Avicel CE has been specially engineered to improve the organoleptic properties of chewable tablets. As a result, end users experience less grittiness, reduced tooth packing, minimal chalkiness, creamier mouthfeel, and improved overall palatability.

Gelcarin and Viscarin NF carrageenans provide emulsion stabilization for creams and enable formulators to tailor the rheology of semi-solid systems, forming clear gels with excellent skin feel and spreadability. We offer a variety of products that impart different gel strengths and textures to your system.
